[net.auto] Cheap way to start racing?

guy@anasazi.UUCP (Guy Finney) (06/04/85)

Hi sports fans. A friend and I have been kicking around the
idea of getting into road racing for a few years now. We're just
going to be weekend racers (though from my motocross days I know
that to race weekends, you gotta fix it during the week!), so we
don't want to get into a class that forces us to spend hundreds
a month maintaining the car and keeping it competitive. The initial
cash outlay for the car shouldn't be overwhelming, either; maybe
a few grand between us. So, assuming there really are netters
who do something besides read the news and ski, we're looking for
whatever tips you might have to offer.
What other sanctioning bodies exist besides SCCA? We'd like
to call them all. Are some better than others - and why?
What's your best advice on cheap but fun racing? Gotta be a road
course and against other drivers, not just the clock.
If this should generate enough traffic, I'll be happy to post
a summary for anyone who's also interested.

Sigh. I've just learned that one of our upstream newsfeeds
does not pass net.auto along. So if anyone has words of
encouragement, I'd appreciate them as mail to me. Thanks.
