Hi!
Last year Nimbus pressed copies of VAD1, 2, 3 in connection with
a research project regarding university publishing on CD-ROMs. Virginia
Discs One and Two follow ISO 9660 format, while VAD3 is an image of a
disk running with Apple's UNIX version, A/UX.
We have a copy of VAD3 available for access via FTP. Connect to
isrmac1.cs.vt.edu
and use login
anonymous
and password
guest
and then do
cd vad3
to get to the disc. Of particular interest for people working with
Information Retrieval are the test collections in directory
colls
and the back issues of IRList Digest in
digests/irlist
I cannot guarantee that our CD-ROM drive will always be up running with
this disc, but we will try to leave it there as much as possible.
Virginia Disc Two has MARC holdings records from the VPI&SU library
regarding our serials, and a collection on Virginiana from the State
library. We have a small number of copies available for those interested.
Virginia Disc One has over 35 searchable collections, lots of downloadable
data, and demonstrates several searching and hypertext collections. I still
have a few hundred copies. It has a rich assortment of text and information
retrieval collections.
We have gone to considerable expense in addition to the funds supplied
by grants to produce these, and so donations are welcome. Discussion on
that is given in the booklet that comes with the disc. Just send me
email with a postal address if you want a copy. But we do encourage
donations - we have only had 2 donations so far in spite of shipping perhaps
a thousand discs (shame, shame on those who did not even send something to
cover postage!).
