The usage based charging scheme for internatinal e-mail services orginally implemented by the University of Melbourne has been replaced by the AARNet Mail Affiliate membership program. Details of this program have been posted to this list on several occassions and applications for membership have been available on-line (ftp amd fetchfile from munnari.oz.au) since January of this year. For the vast majority of sites, AARNet mail affiliate membership incurs an annual membership charge of $1,000. There are no usage based charges. The Australian Unix Users Group have reached an agreement with AARNet that allows them to on-sell affiliate membership to many small volume individuals and organisations. The AUUG charge for this mail service is $250 for AUUG members and $600 for non-members. Both programs (AARNet's and the AUUG program) are implemented by provding Mail Exchanger (MX) records within the Internet Domain Name System that direct electronic mail from the Internet for the ACSnet member site to a specified gateway system. These per-site MX records will replace the existing wildcard MX that currently directs all mail for *.OZ.AU to munnari. This wildcard MX was orginally scheduled to be deleted on 1st March. This was deferred until the 1st May to accomodate the AUUG program. This has been extended until 15th May to allow a final period for sites to ensure that they can continue to have e-mail connectivity to the Internet if they so wish. Thus: ******** ON WEDNESDAY 15TH MAY, 1991 THE INTERNET DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM MAIL EXCHANGER RECORD THAT DIRECTS ELECTRONIC MAIL FROM THE INTERNET FOR ACSNET SITES (IE. SITES WITH ADDRESSES OF THE FORM .OZ.AU) TO MUNNARI WILL BE DELETED. SITES THAT HAVE NOT APPLIED FOR MAIL AFFILIATE MEMBERSHIP UNDER EITHER THE AARNET OR AUUG PROGRAM WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RECEIVE ELECTRONIC MAIL FROM THE INTERNET AFTER THIS DATE. ******** Details of the AARNet mail affiliate membership program are available from munnari.oz via fetchfile. The relevant file is aarnet/doc/affiliate.txt Details of the AUUG mail affiliate membership program are also available from munnari.oz via fetchfile.
