************************************************************************* * * * I am considering buying an '85 Corolla GTS or Celica (new). I would * * appreciate hearing from anyone who owns a Toyota, specifically these * * models. Are you happy with your car? Was it worth the money? WOULD * * YOU BUY THE SAME CAR AGAIN? If not, why? Any assistance would be * * greatly appciated. * * * ************************************************************************* I myself was confronted with the same questions about two months ago when I went looking for a new car. I was particularly interested in the Corolla GTS, Celica GTS and MR2. The Corolla seems like it is supposed to be Toyota's compromise between a sports car and a functional car. There is significant room in the back and the interior is nice, but the car is slow. Even with their 'Twin Cam Sixteen Valve' engine, it's still slow. (Another minus for the Corolla GTS - I would feel pretty stupid driving around with a sticker on my car that said 'Twin Cam 16' in big letters). This engine is the same engine that is in the MR2 - a high revving engine that in the Corolla makes a lot of noise. I liked the way the engine sounded in the MR2, but I found the noise from the engine in the Corolla irritating. Another minus is the price... around here, they are asking about $10,000 for one - I consider that way too steep. I didn't get a chance to test drive an '85 Celica, but a friend of mine has an '83 GTS and he let me drive it. Very comfortable and reliable (he's had to change a light bulb). I also think that these look nicer than the Corollas. Also - the Celicas have a larger engine (2.4l I think) and is much more quiet than the Corolla. These are a little more expensive, but I think that it is well worth the money. Out of the two, I would prefer the Celica. However, having turned into an acceleration freak as of late, I bought an MR2. (I love it) Paul Park. ...decvax!decwrl!rhea!nuwave!park "Did he fire six shots, or only five?"
