Archive-name: sys/next/next-l-archives/1991-05-12 Archive: brownvm.brown.edu:listserv.1a1 [128.148.128.40] Original-posting-by: ATUL@BROWNVM.BITNET (Atul Butte) Original-subject: NeXT-L Administrative Details -- PLEASE READ Reposted-by: emv@msen.com (Edward Vielmetti, MSEN) When I send out digests for NeXT-L, I am usually greeted with 30 pieces of "error-mail" for each digest... usually these describe accounts that have been closed or networks that are down. If I get a significant number of error mail regarding an account, I will remove the account from the mailing list WITHOUT WARNING. I am too busy to find out the reason for each and every error. ERROR MAIL SAYING THAT AN ACCOUNT NO LONGER EXISTS WILL RESULT IN THAT ACCOUNT BEING PROMPTLY DELETED. I can tolerate other errors much longer (such as networks being down, hosts not being found, etc). Please don't get offended if you see a message saying that you've been dropped from NEXT-L... chances are that some mailer between you and me did something wrong. Listserv will try to send you a message when you are dropped, but if you haven't received digests in a while, it's best to re-signon. You are always welcome to resubscribe to NEXT-L. Also, due to the high volume of NEXT-L, I get a lot of error mail saying that mailboxes and mailers are full... if you are reading NEXT-L from a personal account, please try to make sure you have as much mailbox space as possible. If several people at your site are reading NEXT-L, I recommend sending NEXT-L to a local redistribution bulletin board to ease the space requirements. Please note, however, that I will not usually remove accounts that have run out of space. But, please recognize that the amount of information generated by comp.sys.next has placed me in the number-two spot for NetNews posters... NEXT-L can easily generate 25 megabytes in two weeks. If you miss a digest, PLEASE don't ask me for it... I do NOT keep digests after I send them. If you are leaving for vacation, please SIGNOFF from NEXT-L. It will make my job easier. If you run a "vacation" type program notifying mailers that you are away, PLEASE TELL IT TO IGNORE NEXT-L. I WILL PROMPTLY REMOVE ACCOUNTS THAT SEND SUCH MESSAGES TO NEXT-L. One more thing: I cannot guarantee the operational stability of the Listserv database running at Brown. As you can guess, the log files from NEXT-L are immense, and cannot fit into the Listserv machine's memory. If you really want to search through back-issues, I suggest using Listserv to get the files yourself, or use anonymous FTP to brownvm.brown.edu (cd to LISTSERV.1A1). Thanks for your cooperation. As always, if you have problems, please mail me. Atul Butte, MD '94 Brown University atul@brownvm.brown.edu atul@brownvm.bitnet
