In fact, I have sold many people on using emacs on this particular feature alone. It seems logical to extend some of the other emacs functions in the same manner, specially those in compile.el and telnet.el. What I would like is to be able to say M-x compile in a buffer visiting a remote file and the command getting executed in the remote directory, perhaps via a telnet buffer connected to the remote host. Currently, I have to do the steps manually which isn't that bad but the biggest disadvantage is not being able to use next-error and such. Similarly, I wanted M-x find-file in a telnet buffer to prompt me with the remote directory. Even for a novice lisp'er like me it was easy to add the directory tracking feature in the telnet buffer, a la shell mode but with the ange-ftp syntax. However, before doing any work towards remote compilation, it seems a good idea to ask on the net if anyone has already done this because almost anything would be better than whatever I come up with. I haven't found anything relevant using the lispdir but then it doesn't even have well-known things like the gnuserv package listed in it. -- Sanjay Mathur mathur@iastate.edu -- comp.archives file verification tut.cis.ohio-state.edu -rw-rw-r-- 1 ftp 274 29300 May 21 12:05 pub/gnu/emacs/elisp-archive/as-is/ange-ftp.el.Z found ange-ftp ok tut.cis.ohio-state.edu:pub/gnu/emacs/elisp-archive/as-is/ange-ftp.el.Z
