We're in the market for a new car, and one of the leading choices is the Volvo 200 series wagon (formerly 245DL). I would appreciate hearing from any owners who would be willing to share their experiences with me. Some specific questions: Do Volvos really deserve their reputation for reliability and long-term durability? This is my most important consideration in selecting a car, and I'd like to know if it's truth or hype - I'd be considering a Checker if they still made them. How much trouble is it to find parts and service? Am I pretty much limited to going to a dealer for both? What does, say, a tune-up or brake job cost? (Metro Boston netters:) Which dealerships are recommended? Which not? Any problems with theft or break-ins? Thank you, Andrew W. Rogers

I drive a '78 245 DL with auto and air. The car seems to be reliable; after 85k miles I have had few major (or even minor) failures. The most trouble I have had was ~5 yrs ago; I had a leak in the power steering box. Service is no more expensive than for any other car, and 'Tune-Up-Masters' will do a tune up for $15.00. Most metro areas have at least one Volvo dealership, and Sacramento, CA has two. The auto club (or anyone else with a "jim stick") can get into any car, locked or not. It really doesn't make sense to worry about break-ins. Michael Shulman UCD Computer Center ...ucbvax!ucdavis!harpo!ccrms
