What is the purpose of alt.industrial? A. This newsgroup is for the discussion of topics relating to industry, including automation, CIM, flexible manufacturing, quality assurance practices, etc. 2. What's fair game for discussion here? A. Anything from current events to specific automation problems in a given plant. It is hoped that by sharing experiences, problems and ideas, the cause of manufacturing excellence may be advanced. 3. Who started this group anyway? A. Representatives of the Industrial Computing Society, a new organization founded to provide information conduits among/between individuals using computers in industrial applications. 4. Where can I find out more about the Industrial Computing Society? A. Send mail to ics@control.com, or call (919) 990-9303. 5. What is "included" in the realm of "industrial computing"? A. Everything from "PLCs" (Programmable Logic Controllers) to database management systems for handling plant/manufacturing data, along with the entire range of hardware and software issues surrounding these technologies. In short, all of the critical technologies needed to implement a "Computer Integrated" manufacturing enterprise. 6. Is there an archive site for alt.industrial? A. Yes, by anonymous ftp to control.com (name: anonymous, password: anything, cd /pub/ics/alt.industrial). There's also other interesting stuff relating to automation (& etc.) at this site.
