This archive is intended to allow .uu members to easily access major distributions of freely distributable software. Access to the archive is not restricted to .uu members, but there is a surcharge when writing tapes for non-members. .LP One of the aims of this archive is to act as a place where you can obtain all those interesting packages you read about on the Usenet news. This provides fast UK access to the packages even if they are only on remote networks that are either inaccessible or would take too long to transfer from. .NH Contents .LP Here is list of the various tape packages we ship and heavily edited highlights of each package. Where possible these packages are the latest versions available and are complete distributions. .LP We strongly encourage people to wander around the archive as the packages listed below will not give you a true feel for what is available. (See below for details of how to access the archive interactively.) .LP .ft I Please note: .ft P The contents of the archive are constantly changing, in fact large parts of it are automatically updated. This means that from time to time the tape count given below is too small to fit all that is available. To overcome this problem the archive managers may choose to omit items from the distribution to make it fit. A posting to the network news will be made when this happens. If you wish to ensure that a particular package from a distribution set is on your tape please state its name when ordering. If necessary this document will be re-issued with revised tape counts. .LP The ordering information is the of the form: .I package-format-tapes . .NH 2 .cb X.V11R4 .LP The X Window System: Version 11, Release 4. This is the original release tape with a copies of the official patches. This contains the X server for a wide range of machines and many X clients. (See also \fCX.UNOFF\fP below). .or X.V11R4 1 2 1 1 .NH 2 .cb X.UNOFF .LP Unofficial additions and upgrades to the \fCX.V11R4\fP system. This is a copy of the Usenet newsgroup .I comp.sources.x and the user contributed areas copied from various \fCX.V11R4\fP archive sites around the world (chiefly \fCexport.lcs.mit.edu\fP). .or X.UNOFF 2 4 3 2 .NH 2 .cb COMPSRCS .LP Complete copies of the .UX related source Usenet news groups: \fCcomp.sources.unix\fP, \fCcomp.sources.x\fP, \fCcomp.sources.sun\fP, \fCcomp.sources.reviewed\fP and \fCcomp.sources.misc\fP. .or COMPSRCS 1 3 2 1 .NH 2 .cb TEX .LP TeX typesetting system, including sources, styles, formats, previewers... .or TEX 1 2 1 1 .NH 2 .cb GNU .LP All the latest releases from the Free Software Foundation. Including \fCGNU\fP Emacs, the \fCGNU\fP C compiler, the \fCGNU\fP C\v'-.09m'\h'-.14m'+\h'-.18'+\v'.09m' compiler, and clones of many other programs. .or GNU 1 2 1 1 .NH 2 .cb "Unix + Athena + Sun .LP A grab bag of general .UX kernel related utilities - most importantly all the .UX kernel and application programs that Berkeley developed and released, the Athena software - for a secure way of managing networks of workstations, and .sn specific upgrades - including an archive of the Sun-Spots mailing list. .or UAS 1 2 2 1 .NH 2 .cb MINIX .LP A pruned copy of the Usenet news group about the Minix operating system. .or MINIX 1 2 1 1 .NH 2 .cb COMMS .LP Communications, mail, and news software. This includes \fCISODE\fP, name servers, SMTP and X.400 mailers, SNMP managers and agents, slip, gated, tcpdump, niftp, spad, tunnel, kermit, pcomm, xcomm, B and C news, rn, trn and nntp. .or COMMS 1 2 2 1 .NH 2 .cb LANG .LP Languages including sbprolog, various dialects of ML, perl, various lisp's, leif, icon, modula-3... .or LANG 1 2 2 1 .NH Availability .LP The distribution is available both via tape and electronically. Electronically the software is free. However there is a charge for tape distributions. This charge is kept as low as possible. .NH 2 General Enquires .LP General enquires about the software can be handled by email to: \fCukuug\-software@doc.ic.ac.uk\fP .bp .NH 2 Electronic Access .NH 3 Electronic Mail .LP There is an email based server running on the archive. This information server will send out files contained in mail messages, in response to a request contained in a mail message that you have sent it. .LP All such queries have to be sent to: .DS C \fCinfo-server@doc.ic.ac.uk\fP .DE With a \fCSubject:\fP field of \fCwanted\fP. The mesage body should contain the request. .LP Requests are of the form: .DS .ft C Request: subject Topic: \fItopic within that subject\fP Request: end .ft R .DE As an example, in order to obtain information about \fIamd\fP (such as how to get hold of it), you would send a message of the form: .DS .ft C Request: catalogue topic: amd request: end .ft R .DE and the information stored about \fCamd\fP would be mailed back to you. .LP The key words supported by the information server are: .DS .ft C request topic line-limit .ft R .DE These can be upper or lower case or a mixture. They are separated from the remainder of the line by optional tabs, spaces or colons. .LP \fCLine-limit\fP is for use by people who have mail systems that can only deal with small messages. Consider the following request: .DS .ft C line-limit 1000 Request: catalogue topic: xtrek topic gcc request: end .ft R .DE This would mail out \fCxtrek\fP and \fCgcc\fP information in 1000 line chunks (Not including message header information). The line limit must lie between 1000 and 200000000. The default is send the file in 1 message. Everything after the \fCrequest end\fP is ignored. .LP A complex request could look like this: .DS .ft C line-limit 2000 Request: catalogue topic: bash topic: pbm line-limit: 3000 Request: sources topic: software.ms topic: index request: end .ft R .DE .LP \fINOTE\fP: currently there is an upper limit on the how big a file the info server is willing to send. This is currenly set at one megabyte. Requests for files bigger than this will be rejected in order to avoid choking the mail system at \fCdoc.ic.ac.uk\fR and sites that the mail messages may have to pass through. .LP Unfortunately the catalogue entries are largely maintained by people and tend to be out of date, if present at all. This is regretable but due to time contraints enevitable. To allow as much of the archive to be accessed via email two \fIgeneric\fP sources requests are available. Firstly there is .DS .ft C request sources topic scanfor \fIpattern\fP request end .ft R .DE The \fIpattern\fP is an \fCgrep\fP style regular expression which will be matched against a list of all files as well as the indexes for \fCcomp.sources.*\fR archived newsgroups. All matches will be sent back in the reply. The indexes tend not to include all files available nor contain full path names but they can be useful as they give descriptions of articles. .LP To then fetch the file send a request of: .DS .ft C request sources topic path \fIfullpathname\fP request end .ft R .DE Where \fIfullpathname\fP is a pathname returned by the \fCscanfor\fP request. .LP For example: .DS .ft C request sources topic scanfor amd request end .ft R .DE Would return (this is truncated for brevity): .DS .PS -4 .in -2m .ft C Scanning /vol/public for a package called amd scanning files by name (for amd) ===========> 2173 2 May 91 20:10 Usenet/comp.archives/amd/how-to-get.Z 26732 11 Apr 90 00:00 Usenet/comp.sources.unix/volume21/amd/part01.Z 26337 11 Apr 90 00:00 Usenet/comp.sources.unix/volume21/amd/part02.Z ... 282312 23 Jun 90 00:00 unix/amd/amd-5.2.tar.Z 114263 23 Jun 90 00:00 unix/amd/amd-doc5.2.PS.Z 461523 5 Apr 91 22:44 unix/amd/amd5.3-alpha12.tar.Z 426687 21 Dec 90 17:57 unix/amd/amd5.3-alpha9.tar.Z 12101 6 Dec 90 02:50 unix/bsd-sources/usr.sbin/amd/amd/ChangeLog.Z 693 6 Dec 90 02:36 unix/bsd-sources/usr.sbin/amd/amd/Makefile.Z 16465 6 Dec 90 02:49 unix/bsd-sources/usr.sbin/amd/amd/afs_ops.c.Z ... scanning indexes: Usenet/comp.sources.unix (for amd) ===========> volume21/amd/part01.Z v21i089: An Automounter for NFS systems, Part01/13 volume21/amd/part02.Z v21i090: An Automounter for NFS systems, Part02/13 volume21/amd/part03.Z v21i091: An Automounter for NFS systems, Part03/13 ... It is accessible over the Janet X.25 network with an address of: .DS .ft C uk.ac.ic.doc.src (or 00000510200001 if you have no NRS) .ft R .DE .LP When talking to a pad, the call would look like: .DS .ft C call a00000510200001 .ft R .DE or perhaps: .DS .ft C call .00000510200001 .ft R .DE .LP Once connected you should be greeted by the banner: .br .DS .in -2m .ft C .PS -2 Welcome to the UKUUG Software Distribution Service at uk.ac.ic.doc.src .PS +2 .ft R .in +2m .DE Once connected you are in a restricted environment. Use the \fChelp\fP command for up to date details of what commands are available. .NH 3 Anonymous FTP .LP This is only available if you have some form of IP connectivity into ic.doc. The name of the archive is: .DS .ft C src.doc.ic.ac.uk (146.169.3.7) .ft R .DE .LP There is then a help banner to show you how to login. You will also need to find out how your local \fCftp\fP command works. You will normally have the following commands available to you: .TS center; l l. \fCls\fP list the directory \fCdir\fP long listing of the directory \fCcd name\fP change directory \fCget remote local\fP transfer the filed called remote to a file here called local .TE .NH 3 Anonymous FTAM .LP Access is available via the ISO FTAM mechanism. The archive machine runs the ISODE package it can be reached over JANET on address: .DS .ft C 0000005102000 .ft R .DE and over IP on address .DS .ft C 146.169.3.7 .ft R .DE In both cases give a username of \fCanon\fP. .NH 3 Guest NIFTP .LP All material in the is available via Janet (and therefore \fCPSS\fP) using Niftp. On your own system the Niftp command will be called, \fCfcp\fP, \fCcpf\fP or \fChhcp\fP. Please do not confuse this with the common command \fCftp\fP described above. .LP The basic details required for the Niftp are: .DS .ft C Host: uk.ac.ic.doc.src Name: guest Pass: your email addr (must contain an @) .ft P .DE .LP All filenames are all prefixed by \fC<PUB>\fP. The majority of files on the archive are binary, in fact almost all files are compressed in order to save space. This is denoted by the \fC.Z\fP suffix. So all files ending in this suffix are binary, but so are many others, in particular the \fCX.V11R4\fP files \fCtape-?.??\fP. This is usually important to Niftp systems. If an attempted binary transfer is rejected with a message indicating that the file was really text, retry specifying the text option to your Niftp program. .LP To find what files are available first pull back the file \fC<PUB>ls-lR.Z\fP which is a compressed, recursive directory listing of the entire archive. This is updated nightly and is over six hundred kilobytes in its compressed form! .LP This file can be pulled back by using a command like: .DS \fIbash$\fP\ \fCcpf "<PUB>ls-lR.Z@uk.ac.ic.doc.src" ls-lR.Z\fP \fIUser:\fP \fCguest\fP \fIPassword:\fP \fClmjm@doc.ic.ac.uk\fP \fIbash$\fP .DE .LP Note that since the source filename contains the \fC\<\fP and \fC\>\fP characters this argument has to be quoted. .LP Once retrieved this file can be viewed with a command like: .DS \fIbash$\fP\ \fCuncompress < ls-lR.Z | more\fP .DE .LP In addition to this is another index file called \fC<PUB>new-stuff\fP. It contains a listing of all files added to the archive in the last week. .NH 2 Obtaining Distributions via Tape. .LP Currently there are several restrictions on distribution via tape. Firstly to non-\fCUKUUG/EurOpen\fP members there is a 30% surcharge (this can be considered yet another good reason to join the \fCUKUUG\fP or \fCEurOpen\fP). The tapes are in \fCtar\fP format on one of the following kinds and densities of tapes: .DS 1600 bpi half inch 6250 bpi half inch QIC24 QIC150 .DE This corresponds to the \fIformat\fP field of the ordering information. .LP The total cost is a multiple of the total number of tapes required. Currently this is \(ps50.00 per tape. .LP Payment can be made by cheque, Access or Visa cards, or if your purchasing department cannot handle the other forms then by purchase order. .LP To order fill in the form given below and send to: .DS UKUUG Software Distribution Service. c/o Bill Barrett, UKUUG, Owles Hall, Buntingford, Hertfordshire.
