This is the same product, but the last time I looked on rdss they had a
fairly old version ( ~1.22). They have a non-standard anonymous account
configuration, and I could not remember how to get in so I could check it this
morning. It would be safe to look at the dates on the files on rdss - if they
are more than 6 months old, it is safe to assume that they are old. Admittedly
it would be nice to be able to distribute gcc-vms as a compressed backup
save-set, but there are a couple of compelling reasons why this is not done.

	1) Backup save sets are larger - there seems to be more information
stored there, and as a result there is more data that needs to be transferred.

	2) You need a special version of LZDCMP and LZCOMP to
compress/decompress a backup save-set, since the RMS file attributes must be
set properly before backup will recognize the save set.

	3) UNIX does not have any capability to unpack a backup save-set, while
there are detar utilities floating around for VMS. Some people want to
decompress and unpack the distribution on a unix machine, and then ftp the
resulting files to the VMS machine.

	4) Compressed tar format is used for everything else on prep.

If you actually ordered the tape from the FSF, you would get a tape
with four backup save-sets on it (executables (equ to gcc-vms.tar.Z), gcc
sources, gas sources, and bison sources).
