Original-subject: Great Roads Survey Monthly Posting

This is the 4th posting from the Great Roads Survey. The list now totals
75 roads in the US, Canada, the British Isles, Europe and Australia. 13
roads have been added since the last posting (21-May-91).

I've checked all of US and Canadian the roads against Rand-McNally and edited
the descriptions for brevity and clarity. The list is now too long to post
(>500 lines), but I will happily e-mail the list to any that ask for it. If
you like, a SASE will bag you a printed list (my snail mail address is below).
I will continue to post a monthly summary, noting the size of the list and
solicting contributions.

It has been suggested that I form a mailing list for this. If the volume
of requests warrants this, I'll do it. Alas, my site is not properly
equipped for anonymous FTP, which would be the ideal distribution method.

If you wish to contribute to this list, send me e-mail, don't post.
Please be specific with your directions. Descriptions like "gee, I don't
know where this road is, or what its called, but it sure is neat!" don't
help much. Remember to include the state/province/etc. Not everyone is
as familiar with the local geography as you are. If I can't find the
road on a map with a few minutes search, I will a) toss your description,
b) mail you for clarification, or c) note in the list itself that the
road may not exist. Which one I pick depends on my mood. Here is a
suggested format:

US, MO, south-central, MO32 from MO21 to Success. 98 miles.
Recently paved, this park road ranges from very fast sweepers to medium
speed swoops. Very up and down. Lightly traveled and tree-lined. For a
pleasent diversion, use State Rds. P and DD south out of Potosi to
intersect US32 east of Bixby. In Bixby is a great little gas station &
eatery you should visit.

I will attempt to bend your description into something like this if
you send it some other way.

If you object to contributing to the list, claiming that you don't wish
to clutter "your" road, remember that the readership of the rec.auto and
rec.moto newgroups is only 80,000 or so WORLD-WIDE. The chances of the
traffic on your road increasing measurably is small indeed. Car-and-Driver's
annual 10 Best Roads list hardly ruins those roads and their readership
is over 100,000 in the US alone. Don't hoard knowledge. (end of speech)

A few thoughtful types have e-mailed me new descriptions or notes about
some of the roads in the previous lists. I encourage such comments. Since
I can't physically check these roads out for myself, I must rely on the
contributors. If you honestly feel a road on the list is no good, take
it up with the contributor (they're listed, along with e-mail addresses).
Remember, your idea of a great road may differ from someone else's. If the
contributor liked a road enough to remember it and send it to me, there
must be something good about it.

A big Thank You to all of the contributors.
