Kamens) Original-subject: Pit-manager.mit.edu archive now WAIS- and Prospero-accessible Reposted-by: emv@msen.com (Edward Vielmetti, MSEN) The archive of Usenet periodic informational postings on pit-manager.mit.edu has, until recently, been available in two different ways: (1) anonymous ftp to pit-manager.mit.edu; (2) mail-server retrieval through mail to mail-server@pit-manager.mit.edu. Earlier today, I installed both WAIS and Prospero on pit-manager, so that the archives are now accessible through either of those protocols. If you have WAIS software installed on your system, you can query the "usenet" database on pit-manager.mit.edu to search through the archive. For example, a query with the words "unix frequently asked questions" returns the following document with a perfect score of 1000, and several of other documents with lesser scores: 1: Score: 1000, lines:1850 'Frequently_Asked_Questions_about_Unix_-_with_Answ ers_[Monthly_posting] /site/mit/ftp/pub/usenet/comp.unix.questions/' Similar keyword searches can be used to find nearly any of the periodic informational postings. If you don't have WAIS and are interested in it, the most recent version of the software is accessible via anonymous ftp to think.com, in /Wais/wais-8-b1.tar.Z. There is also a Mac client in /Wais/wais.sit.hqx, and some other files in the /Wais directory explaining the WAIS project. If you have Prospero installed, you will find the pit-manager Usenet archives accessible in /archive-sites/pit-manager.mit.edu/pub/usenet, as well as in the various newsgroup subdirectories of /newsgroups. If you don't have Prospero and are interested in it, the most recent version of the software is accessible via anonymous ftp to cs.washington.edu, in /pub/prospero.tar.Z Please don't write to me if you want more information about WAIS or Prospero, because I'll just send you files out of the source tree.
