mason@tmsoft.uucp (Dave Mason) (03/14/89)
The software that gateways the Unix Unanimous mailing list to this newsgroup assumed that there would be a From: line on any incoming mail. This has recently been shown (by 2 postings) to not be correct, and the result has been that the article when it made it to the newsgroup looked like it came from uucp@tmsoft. I have changed the software so it looks for a 'From ' line as well as a 'From:' line. The name in a 'From ' line may not be a good choice, but it's about the only choice available if there's no From:. Other headers: 1) the Sender: line WILL point to uucp@tmsoft, but your software should not try to reply to that address, unless there's no From: (which there WILL be). 2) the Path: line WILL point to tmsoft!uucp, as anything else would block it from appearing on machines between the originator and tmsoft. Some OLD NEWS SOFTWARE may reply on the basis of the Path:. This is wrong behaviour, and will end up dumping your article in my inbox where I may or may not be able to do anything about it. As for may or may not be able to help :-), would whoever sent the original request for help about ^G's etc. with Subject: the naive hacker please send me mail, I have a reply for you from somebody. ../Dave
