This BCUUG Dinner Meeting - Uniforum '89 and UNIX Trends ======================================================== Uniforum is the largest conference and trade show for UNIX. It is held annually, and rotates among San Francisco, Dallas, and Washington, D.C. The last one was held in San Francisco at the beginning of March. Our two panelists both attended and will present highlights of what they saw and the latest trends from different perspectives. About the Panelists =================== David Westrheim is President of Sagan Computer Systems Inc. He has been involved in the development and delivery of UNIX-based computing solutions since 1979. His UNIX specific experience spans academic research, artificial intelligence software projects, and commercial information processing systems. Mr. Westrheim founded his company in 1982. Sagan is a UNIX-based products and services vendor serving the end-user and VAR communities throughout Western Canada. He will be sharing some of his experiences from the recent UniForum conference in San Francisco in addition to his perspectives on developing technology trends for the 1990s and how they relate to UNIX. George E. Pajari is President of a group of companies specialising in UNIX. Clarendon Datex provides consulting and contract programming services; Trainix provides UNIX and authorised SCO training; and Driver Design Labs develops UNIX systems software products on contract. He has spoken and written widely on UNIX and his most recent article appears in this month's issue of BYTE magazine. Now that UNIX has passed its twentieth anniversary, George will reflect briefly on the significant events of the past six months that will influence the evolution of UNIX over the next couple of years and attempt to predict the major developments of 1989-90. Topics to be touched upon include UNIX standards (i.e., POSIX), the Open Software Foundation, graphical user interfaces, X windows, the US government, and what this all means to commercial users. The Dinner ========== We are looking forward to meeting you again at the Bayshore, this time in the Stanley Room. See old friends and find new ones over drinks before going in to dinner. Those who like surprises ought not to read further. Let's hope the warm weather continues so we'll enjoy the cool melon appetiser. To boost local excellence, the main course will be baked filet of B. C. salmon with the chef's choice of vegetables. We end with the exotic: coupe Romanoff. I can hardly wait! The panel discussion and learning about the latest in UNIX will be interesting too! See you there. And don't forget to reserve by Monday the 8th. -- Stuart.Lynne@wimsey.bc.ca uunet!van-bc!sl 604-937-7532(voice) 604-939-4768(fax)
