Jerry Nelson, the local Porsche dealer, recently drove in some SCCA 24-hour race (Nelson Ledges?). I caught the tail end of an interesting conversation. The 'vettes took the top 5 or so places, while the 944 turbos the next 5 or so. He indicated that on the straights the two cars were even, while the Vettes cornered better because of the Z51 suspension and really wide tires. Six Porsche engineers from Weissach were helping the 944 drivers. Hopefully, they will convey the need for better suspension to the boys back home. Jerry mentioned something about a separate class being established for the Vette and 944 turbo, which apparently run away from everything else. Other cars that impressed him were the Dodge Daytona, the 300ZX turbo, the Thunderbird turbo coupe, and the VW GTI. The latter consistently cornered with the inside rear wheel in the air without tipping over. -- George Tomasevich, ihnp4!twitch!grt AT&T Bell Laboratories, Holmdel, NJ
