[net.auto] MGB Clutch Problems, Returned Mail, and Dry Starts

delbene@homxa.UUCP (K.DELBENE) (07/15/85)

Thanks for all who responded to my question about my MGB's clutch problem
(although the suggestions to sell the car were NOT appreciated). I pulled
the engine and found the seals were holding, but the clutch was down to
the rivets - and after only 23k miles!) So now the engine sits in a
million pieces awaiting a great fit of enthusiasm to put it back together.

One question: I tried responding to each message posted on the net with
the "r" command, only to have them sent back with a nasty response from
MAILER DAEMON. Am I missing something? Does anyone have any golden
rules on how to respond and decide on return paths to distant machines (I'm
on homxa at Bell Labs-Holmdel).

Finally, another tech. question: What are the causes of dry starts (the
phenomenon where you get valve train noise for the first 2-5 seconds after
start up until you oil pressure has built up. I've noticed this problem
on my MGB and my '65 Mustang, and my heart sinks every time I hear the noise.
(I've checked the oil pump and the wear is within specs. And the valve train
(with the exception of the cam, which I haven't checked ) is in good shape.)
It seems to me it must cause excessive wear to parts. I've heard suggestions
of oil additives or synthetic oil to cure the problem. Anyone have any ideas
on the problem? I presently run Castrol GTX 20-50 and change my oil every 2K
miles.
