It is my understanding that there are versions of Mach available from CMU that run on both Sun and Encore. 1) If Mach is not available for Sun and Encore, will it be available in the future and if so, when? 2) If Mach is available for Sun and Encore: - is NFS included? - does it have the latest Van Jacobson network enhancements? - how difficult is it to install, and get running, Mach on these platforms? I am aware that Encore has their own version of Mach, but they want big bucks which I do not have so that is not an option, unless Encore wants to let us `beta' it. What other platforms does Mach run on? Thanks --- W. Encore currently offers a Mach kernel based on CMU's Release 2.0, with extensive modifications to enhance parallelism. Release 2.0 does not include any kernel NFS support, although a user-level NFS server (no client support) is available. Big bucks may no longer be necessary. Write Dave Kirschen (kirschen@encore.com, 508-460-0500) for the details. The current release contains the "latest" VJ code (as of about six months ago). We will make available a version of CMU's Release 2.5 in the not too distant future, which may include NFS depending on factors not entirely within our control. We think it's fairly easy to install and run Mach on any Encore platform, including 2-20 NS32332s or NS32532s. Buy a machine and see for yourself! >What other platforms does Mach run on? NeXT, Evans and Sutherland, DEC 3100, IBM PC/RT, VAX, many flavors of Sun, BBN Butterfly, others coming. Alan

Encore makes available an implementation of Mach Version 2.0 for the Encore Multimax multiprocessor. It runs on both the 32332- and 32532-based systems. Encore's work with Mach was done as part of a larger DARPA research project to build a 1000 MIPS supercomputer. It is available for a charge of $1000. Mach for the Multimax is available only through Encore, not directly from CMU. The primary difference between Version 2.0 from CMU and the Encore implementation is significant additional parallelization of the filesystem and network code in the kernel for improved performance on a multiprocessor. This work will be described in detail in a paper to be presented at the Usenix Workshop on Building Distributed and Multiprocessor Systems next month in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. As it is based on Mach Version 2.0, the current Encore implementation does not include NFS. The next release will be available in Q1 90 and is based on Version 2.5, which does include NFS. Hope this helps.
