[comp.os.mach] Mach on a Mac...

uucibg@swbatl.UUCP (3929) (09/21/89)

Sorry to ask what must be a common question but:

Is it true that Mach is beta on Mac II's and if so when will it not be beta
and will Mt Xinu be doing a port I could buy?

Thanks,

Oops. I forgot to mention that I'd naturally be happy to buy elsewhere or
even not buy but still receive (e.g. GNUware or some such). Silly of me...

Thanks again,

I am sure there are people out there that can give you an "offical" answer
to Mach on a MacII... but in the mean time... My understanding is that
a Mach port (first cut) is done. A number of people have seen it at CMU
and at Usenix (in the Mt Xinu booth).

The agreement between CMU and Mt Xinu is that CMU will continue to do Mach
releases to sites that won't bother CMU once they are given a tape, i.e.
people who know what they are doing and can handle beta software. This
will be done so quick changes can get out the door to researchers. Since
the Mach sources are in one large source tree it should be possible to
biuld Mach for the MacII from one of the CMU tapes (they might even do
a release specificly for the MacII, who knows.)

Xt Xinu is contracted by DOD to handle a "production" release on Mach.
The cost will not be great since it is funded by DOD. I understand that
the first release should be 1st Q 1990. I believe all the details for
the MacII release have been taken care of, for awhile the was some
question as to what Apple was going to do since some of the drivers for
the MacII came from them, but I think that is all cleared up now.

DISCLAIMER: The following is *NOT* in any way, shape, or form an official
statement. I am just relaying the facts as I recall them.

I spoke to some folks at CMU about getting MACH for MACs. The deal is
that Apple funded the programmers to do the port at CMU. Now the MACH
folks are waiting for Apple to decide wether or not they want to
release MACH as supported software. So, everyone will have to wait
until either Apple makes up their minds or, some time limit runs out.

If the later happens (or Apple decides not to support MACH), CMU will
have to option to distribute the OS themselves (more likely they will
have XINU do it). Of course, this assumes that all proprietary code
is removed from the system.

That's the scoop (as far as I know)

Can someone who knows say whether it will run on an SE/30?

I don't KNOW, but I do know Macintoshes, and it seems awfully unlikely. I
doubt the team doing the port would find it worthwhile to worry about the
considerable differences between the II-family and the SE/30 hardware (_I_
sure wouldn't wanna write device drivers for both of them)!

On the other hand, maybe they ARE really interested in the SE/30... enough
so to dedicate an engineering team (of one?) to the task. But I doubt it.

It won't.
