Lay the Foundation for the Next Generation of Open Systems Software **************** ** Research Engineers (Operating Systems) ** Open Software Foundation Research Institute Grenoble, France The OSF Research Insitute is laying the foundations for OSF/2, the next generation of open system kernel. Working directly with the Mach, Amoeba, Chorus, and other groups, we study, evaluate, and extend research prototypes for micro-kernel operating system architectures. Our work will create the core of OSF's operating system for the mid-1990's. We seek an international, diverse, and highly-qualified staff. Our state-of-the-art work environment includes high-performance personal workstations networked with leading-edge multiprocessor hardware. Our working language is English. ** Research Engineers (Operating Systems) ** Your innovations will be the foundation for multiprocessor distributed operating systems for the 1990's. You will explore this technology as part of a very strong team, evaluating existing prototypes, measuring them, improving them, and combining them to create the next generation of operating systems. Your evaluation strategy may include experi- mentation with higher-level software platforms (data base, object management, multi-media, ...). You will influence OSF's vision of the future and participate actively in the research community by speaking and publishing. Extensive experience in one of these areas: advanced operating system design or implementation, distributed computing, performance measurement, object-oriented language design. Knowledge of Mach, Amoeba, or Chorus highly desirable. Strong experience in software research and development. OSF has a significant funding commitment from the leaders in the industry: Bull, Digital, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, IBM, Nixdorf, Philips, Siemens; and is supported by over two hundred member companies. The Motif user interface, OSF's first offering, is quickly becoming a de facto standard in the industry. The OSF Research Institute has offices in Cambridge, Massachusetts and in Grenoble. The Grenoble office will grow to a staff of 30 over the next two years. Besides its kernel work, OSF Grenoble also supports experimentation with the full range of OSF offerings in academia and in research organizations. ... and on Grenoble Grenoble is a city of 400,000 set in a river valley and surrounded by the Alps. Our offices are situated next to the (large) university campus and are easily accessible from the center of town or from the suburbs (we are right off the highway). Lyon is one hour away, Geneva two hours, and Turin (Italy) three hours. The Mediterranean coast is not far, and Paris is three and a half hours by TGV ("the fastest passenger train in the world"). Favorite outdoor sports are skiing, climbing, and hiking; there are many indoor sports facilities as well.
