My husband and I want to buy a MAZDA 626LX SPORT COUPE.But we can't seem to decide whether to buy the 85 or the 86 model coming out in October. A MAZDA dealer told us the price will be increased about $2000 CAN for the 86 model without any change or upgrade on the car. Since Japanese cars are in great demand so there is no discount on the 85 model anyway, we originally decided to buy the 86 so our car will not be depreciated so fast. But with such a big increase in price, we don't know if it's a good thing to do anymore. Any idea or advice on this matter will help us greatly. We also would like to know more about the car. We currently drive a Honda Civic so of course we find that MAZDA is much better in every aspect except fuel consumption. Has anyone had problems with a 626? How good is the road handling? We thank-you in advance for your replies. Kim Vo {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!aesat!kim

Unless you expect to sell the car within a few (1-3 or so) years, the difference in the depreciation between an '85 and an '86 will be no where near the $2k original price differnce. If you're like me and keep the car as long as it is running well, you can probably keep the car long enough for the difference to be very little. However, I wouldn't believe a dealer who said the price was going up $2k (nearly 20%) next year. He probably just wants to be sure to get a sale now. Try another dealer--this one doesn't sound like anyone to trust (not that you can trust many of them...) > We also would like to know more about the car. How good is the road handling? > I have an '83 626 (not an LX; the first year of the current design). With about 28K miles, nothing except new car shakeout (door adjustments and the like) and routine scheduled maint. About 30 mpg overall (suburban and highway--very little city or heavy traffic). Seems very solid, and I expect it to last a long time (check Consumer Reports for frequency of repair records). Great handling--much better than my '81 Accord. Feels like a sports car (I DON'T have power steering). Only complaint--not much room under (I DON'T have power steering). Only complaint--not much room under the hood. The oil filter is very hard to get at. With the AC on the LX, you might not be able to get at it unless the car is on a lift (which is ok if you let the dealer do the servicing). Bill Hery
