Opportunities in Parallel Processing with Encore Computer The Mach Operating System group within Encore is currently involved with a number of projects, including: * Porting Mach to the Gigamax, a 1,000MIPS symmetric shared-memory multi-processor. * Porting Mach to high-performance RISC architectures. * Providing support to OSF for parallelization of the OSF/1 operating system. * Additional parallelization of the Mach kernel, utilities and libraries. * Providing real-time capability. * Enhancing performance and reliability. The Mach Operating System group is part of an advanced R&D organization within Encore Computer. While the company ships and supports Mach as a commercial product, the group is also responsible for OS research. Several DARPA contracts are currently in place which fund parallel OS research on Mach. Encore Computer has several openings available in our Mach Operating System group. These include: Kernel Developers: Several positions are available for individuals with significant operating system internals experience. These individuals will help to parallelize portions of the Mach kernel, NFS and 4.4BSD filesystem. Our challenge is to produce a reliable, high-performance operating system, with many new and "state-of-the-art" features that is portable to multiple machine architectures. Experience with UNIX(tm) internals required; experience with parallel and distributed operating systems, real-time systems, System V streams, NFS and Mach are desireable. "Toolsmith": This individual will be responsible for enhancing existing UNIX utilities and libraries through parallelization, development of new utilities for in-house performance evaluation, and general maintenance of the utilities and libraries. Experience programming under UNIX in C is required. Positions are also available within our System V development group.
