Anyone out there have any experience with the new Chevy Nova (the GM/Toyota joint-venture car)? I will summarize responses received over the next week for the net. ===== Alberto Segre Artificial Intelligence Research Group Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Coordinated Science Laboratory University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign ARPA: uicsl!segre@uiuc.ARPA CSNET: uicsl!segre@uiuc.CSNET UUCP: ...!{ihnp4, convex, pur-ee}!uiucdcs!uicsl!segre

As usual, fleets and rental car companies always get the first batch of new cars. I rented a car from National for two weeks in June, and they were pushing the Nova (it was rated in the "midsize" class, even though I considered it a compact, because it had four doors). And the car must have just come off the truck, because it had 16 miles on it. I had a lot of luggage with me -- so much that it wouldn't all fit in the trunk of my midsize Chevy Malibu at home, but it all fit in the trunk of the Nova I was renting. The trunk looked small from the outside, but it was designed to have quite a bit of useful room inside. As far as power goes, I got good pickup, even though the engine seemed to be revving too fast. Instruments and controls were laid out comfortably, and front seats sat you up straight and comfortably. Gas mileage was outstanding -- miles-per-gallon in the low thirties in city and high thirties on the highway -- even with a/c. If one of my cars needed replacing now, I'd certainly give the Nova a second look after enjoying the rental car so much. Carl Blesch
