[comp.os.mach] Mach 3.0 vs. Mt. Xinu Mach 2.6 disk format

adam@soda.berkeley.edu (Adam J. Richter) (04/30/91)

I am attempting to boot the Mach 3.0 micro-kernel from my
Mt. Xinu Mach 2.6 root file system, using Mt. Xinu's boot program.
Mach 3.0 gets as far as recognizing the devices attached to the machine,
but, for some reason, can't find Mt. Xinu's unix file system. It does
read the first sector of the disk properly, and figures out where the
DOS partitions are, but it appears that the format of "struct evtoc"
has changed or the magic number (VALID_PD = 0xCA5E600D) stored in
evtoc->sanity has changed. I modified the Mach 3.0 kernel to search
the whole disk for a sector that had VALID_PD at the appropriate offset
and it found no such sectors.

Has anyone else had this problem?
