A question for Porsche enthusiasts: a friend's mechanic is rebuilding his 911 and plans to sell it for about $8K when he's done. The car is a '70 911E, but he has completely rebuilt the engine and replaced the fuel injection with dual webers. He is also installing a 911S camshaft, and hopes to get about 180 hp. The engine was out of the car when I saw it, and is gorgeous. The transmission and driveshaft have also all been rebuilt. Other mod's include cross-drilling the brake disks and Carrera RS front and rear spoilers. He may add a front oil-cooler. Now for the bad part - the drivers side bottom panel has quite a bit of rot. Apparantly somebody tried to steal the wheels but was scared away before he got them. The driver didn't notice and drove away, and one of the wheels fell off the car, scraping that part of the car's belly. There are now noticible rusted out areas - I guess this car came about five years before Porsche started galvanizing the body. Also, the car lacks a rear anti-sway bar. So my questions are - should I steer clear of an older 911 with rust problems, and how much might it cost to have part of the underbody restored? Also, any comments on the modifications I have mentioned, especially the weber conversion? Thanks. John

Porsche belly pans are readily available. If there is a good restoration shop in your area that will do the rust work for less than $1k, I think the rot should not be a problem. Have fun! Zigurd R. Mednieks ...wjh12!mirror!zrm ...decvax!mit-eddie!zrm ZRM@MIT-MC
