[comp.sys.next] ENROLL, copossible conseqence

konrad@a.cs.okstate.edu (Konrad Brandemuhl) (10/29/88)

So you want a NeXT system, and Jobs told all professionals to
ENROLL, if they wanted one. Well, as a student, I would
appreciate if you all didn't do this at once.

Lets consider: Suppose a fair percentage of the professional
community decided to enroll for the Fall of 1989. During
this Spring, Summer, Winter, University administrators may
possibly notice an increase in student enrollment. The
administrator may view this as a change in enrollment trend.
This administrator may make future enrollment predictions base
on these new figures and may start planning new, costly
projects. Little does the administrator realize the real cause
for the increase in enrollment.

Now the professional, after his NeXT purchase may 1) Withdraw
before the semester is over, 2) Complete the semester and withdraw
before the beginning of the next semester. In either situation,
the university experiences a revenue short fall, and more importantly
fails to meet revenue projection with regard to the new projects.
The administrator is left with several options: 1) cancel project
(painful, embarassing for the administrator) 2) find alternate source
of funds (if he had alt. sources of funds he would have gone ahead
with the project regardless of enrollment figures. 3) cut back
student services. (That's the key) 4) Raise tuition. (undoubtally).

Who can afford and benefit the most?
Who can not afford and least likely to benefit.

I seriously doubt this would happen but just thought I would
mention a worst case scenario.
