For more information about anti-aliasing and text, there are two papers in the 1980 SIGGRAPH proceedings. One of them is by John Warnock (a name you should recognize), but I forget the title. The other paper is called "Human Vision, anti-aliasing, and the cheap 4000 line display". The Warnock paper discusses text, and the other paper presents the perceptual evidence for anti-aliasing (why it works). I am constantly amazed that anti-aliased text has not become the norm. It works (very well). It is cheap to implement (cheaper than raising the pixel resolution of the display). I believe the only commercial products that incorporated anti-aliased text were some fairly old CRT terminals from HP. Wm Leler
