[comp.sys.next] Gray-scale antialiasing

wm@ogccse.ogc.edu (Wm Leler) (10/31/88)

For more information about anti-aliasing and text, there are two papers
in the 1980 SIGGRAPH proceedings. One of them is by John Warnock (a
name you should recognize), but I forget the title. The other paper is
called "Human Vision, anti-aliasing, and the cheap 4000 line display".
The Warnock paper discusses text, and the other paper presents the
perceptual evidence for anti-aliasing (why it works).

I am constantly amazed that anti-aliased text has not become the norm.
It works (very well). It is cheap to implement (cheaper than raising
the pixel resolution of the display). I believe the only commercial
products that incorporated anti-aliased text were some fairly old CRT
terminals from HP.
