Have you seen the Mac IIx motherboard? This is a subtle, but big (in my mind) difference -- many chips have been replaced by one or two VLSI packs. A fellow at Apple said that it was a 4-layer board instead of the Mac II 6-layer. The 68030 may be more expensive, but my suspicion is that the IIx already costs the same as a II to produce thanks to chip savings. Now, how long will we have to wait for these savings to come down to us?
