When our local NeXT salesman was here last week, we chatted about the details of
ordering the two NeXT workstations we wanted.
The following facts came to light:
1) Initially, the systems MUST be shipped with a 330 megabyte hard disk, by
fiat of their software development group. Therefore, we must modify
our purchase order to include 2 hard disks, to the tune of $4000.
2) They don't just ship us systems, they deliver, install, and nurse new
systems along. Such delivery has to be scheduled. Such delivery
cannot be scheduled until:
a) we provide two names of people for software support
b) we provide 1 name of person for hardware support
c) our two software support people attend "training camp", currently
given only on the west coast, but maybe coming east
3) Delivery unlikely before January or February
4) We cannot order two development machines; we have to also order a
"system starter kit" = $7500; which is another NeXT workstation to be
used for running diagnostics.
I have asked him if we could buy the software for this "third"
workstation, and use it on one of our two machines, if something happens
to one of the regular machines. But I am fearful of the answer.
We have also asked at what point we could order a couple of machines without
all the rigamarole.
Has anyone had similar experiences? Any comments? We would commit to a number
of NeXT machines, but not until we evaluate them.
