The Indiana Northwest Region of the Sports Car Club of America will be puting on a road rally this Sunday, August 11. The Summer Sizzler Rally has been an annual favorite for many years, combining a traditional TSD (time, speed, and distance) rally with a steak fry at the endpoint. This year's rally will begin at Merrillville Volkswagen Porsche on US 30 about 1 mile east of I65 in Merrillville, Indiana. Registration and safety inspection will be between 11:00 AM and 12:45 PM. The first car will leave at 1:01 PM. The entry fee is $12 per couple, driver and navigator, and includes two steaks. You must supply your own condiments, plates, utensils, etc. The endpoint is Deep River County Park in Lake County Indiana. Trophies will be awarded to the top finishers in each of three classes, based upon experience and equipment. A road rally requires no special equipment or exotic cars; most people use the family car. A watch or clock is necessary, and a compass is recommended. The route will be approximately 75 miles long and take about 3 hours. The idea is simply to follow a set of route instructions at a given speed, and thereby arrive at the destination at the appropriate time. Speeds are always within the posted limits. Beginners are welcome. Experienced national level rallyists will be on hand to answer questions, and the class system gives beginners a chance to win a trophy.
