[comp.sys.next] Brightness control slows system down... why?

gshippen@pollux.usc.edu (Gregory Shippen) (02/01/89)

The first real NeXT machine appeared on campus recently and I was
fortunate to get a quick demo of the machine. I won't bore everybody
with the kudo's. I do however have a question neither I nor the operator
could answer:

The operator demoed an animation sequence (in this case is was an eagle
flying across the screen). We noticed that we could slow down nearly
to a halt the animation (indeed stop it completely if we tried hard) by
manipulating the brightness controls located toward the right side of the
keyboard. This effect baffles me. Why would the process/display be slowed
down by hitting these keys? Surely the process monitoring the keyboard and
tweaking the screen doesn't require that much time to do it's business.
Would somebody try it on their machine and offer an explanation.

Enquiring minds want to know.....
