rdist on the NeXTs seems to want to create it's temporary files in /etc rather than /tmp for some reason. This is not only annoying but it won't work since /etc is usually on a read-only partition. I'm a little hesitant to just patch the binary to use /tmp instead of /etc. This seems like a good example of a place source would be useful-- if not to fix it, to at least try and understand WHY it is doing it the way it is.
