A colleague at another university is in charge of setting up NeXT systems in their lab. She has had problems getting the hard drives built properly. One machine appeared to build the disk, but never prompted for carriage return to signal completion. Another only built 7MB on the disk, and now refuses to boot from the optical disk. When forcing a boot from the optical disk from the PROM monitor, the machine reported an "ECC error", causing the boot to fail. She had noticed previously that that same optical disk's Shakespeare directory contained one-letter filenames, and found out later the files should have had long names. She doesn't have a whole lot of printed documentation (mostly how to plug things in), nor a support number (yet?). Any pointers or help on this would be appreciated. Send replies via e-mail to her at: ruth@visual1.tamu.edu or to me. She doesn't have news access yet, so don't post replies. Thanks. Dan Ross dross@cs.utexas.edu University of Texas at Austin
