Dear All,
well thanks to the pestering efforts of Nigel Horne, Rick Paul
and Jack Jansen, here is a little summary file of the responses
I got regarding my query for a window system for 'normal' i.e.
non-high-res, de-miced terminals.

John at Genrad actually did send me the stuff for maryland
windows. I quite like it although due to the size of the screen
(only 24 lines for our terminals) it really is not all very
useful. Still *I* like messing with them just to be different.
Also it gets you thinking about these pty's a lot....

Anyway thanks so much to all of you who responded: net.support
is the best thing since sliced bread. I hope that the
information summarised here is useful...

A company here in Dallas is currently developing such a product
for use under Xenix, and might be willing to sell the source code
for a port to the VAX running BSD. Contact:

We have an editor (called ase) that reads termcap, allows rectangular
windows essentially anywhere on the screen (overlapping, etc.). It has
a minimal ability to attach a window to a pty and run the shell from that.

This is not public domain at the momment, nor is it our standard product,
but we would probably be willing to sell.

The editor runs on bsd 4.2 and vms.

I can send you documentation if you are interested.

Wait for 4.3. There will be a program called 'window'. This runs
multiple windows on standard ascii terminals. I have the 4.2 version.

4.3 should be out in about 3-4 weeks for people who can read 6250 bpi tapes.
/* did you hear that ?!?!?! ^^^^^^^ - anyone out there have a drive
that does BOTH 6250 and 1600 bpi ??? I WANT 4.3 !!!!
(Whoever had the silly idea to distribute 4.3 on such a tape
density ?? Or am I being silly ? - Sebastian */

/* Neville here suggests that I look at curses but then adds : */

I have a package, called Swift, written by a friend of mine (Bob Fly) which
does do true virtual windows. i haven't been able to get in touch with him
about distributing it, though. i have added some features, and made some
fixes (there is still one bug i can't isolate), and find it very much easier
to use than curses. It's fast, too. The VMS version is as fast (sometimes
faster) than DEC's own package called SMG.

John kindly sent me a package called 'maryland' windows. It works fine with
our Vt100 and VT220 terminals but I am having some difficulty making our
screen editors (ded and emacs) work on a window basis. Vi seems
to be ok though.

Have you heard of the Maryland Window Library by Chris Torek? I could send
you the documentation, or the sources. There may be restrictions on it's
use for commercial applications.

By the way, the 4.3 "wm" doesn't seem to use insert and delete line.
This makes it intensely painful at 1200 baud on an H19 or other
reasonably smart terminal.
