I have the sense that the NeXT optical drive (the drive itself, not the media) may be rather flakey. This sense comes from a number of articles posted here, from talking with friends in other places, and from experience that local people seem to have had. Is the Optical Disk drive the much touted but weak link in the whole machine? Has anyone been aware of enough machines to notice a pattern? Mike p.s. My memory also is that the electrical parameters of the read mechanism are such that valid 1 and valid 0 are a challenge to tell apart, which suggests the drive might be rather sensitive to misalignment, etc... -- Mike Rutenberg Reed College, Portland Oregon (503)239-4434 (home) BITNET: mdr@reed.bitnet UUCP: uunet!tektronix!reed!mdr Note: These remarks are not intended to represent any organization
