[comp.sys.next] NPD problems

flur@gt-eedsp.UUCP (Peter W. Flur) (05/17/89)

I have been trying out some of the applications provided in 0.9. Most
seem to work with no problems. However, one key feature of some,
printing, seems to have problems. For example, in Draw, when I select
print, it comes back with the message: Can't connect to npd.

Can someone please explain?

Peter

I was able to work around this error by restarting npd.

Use ps and grep to find the process that is running /usr/lib/NextPrinter/npd.
Su, kill that process and then restart npd.

I suspect that npd and lpd are both sensitive to changes in the printcap
section of the netinfo data base and must both be restarted when you
change it.

The printer driver and the printer application appear to be much more
unstable than the ones in 0.8. The Printer application vanishes when
the printer driver starts, its test option hangs up if there is the
slightest problem with the printer, entire sets of output vanish, pages
from other output are left blank, etc., etc.
