[comp.sys.next] Info about NeXT-Distribution

dvlsbd@dionysos.cs.umu.se (05/26/89)

   Hello,

I have a couple of questions about the distribution of the NeXT
machine, and hope they haven't been discussed before in this
newsgroup. Let's see:

*) Where can you buy/get the NeXT today? Is the machine just available
for some kind of computer-knowhow bunch of people who happens to be
US-citizens with University-connections in any way? Or is there
*any* posibility for a non-US citizen to get it? If so -
when, where and how? I would be glad to know. :-)
OK - I know the machine has higher-education suroundings as its
target market, but what about higher education market in the rest of
the world? Will we ever get a chance to touch the cube?
Perhaps the machine also is under its debugging phase of development,
and therefore kept from too great distribution, what do I know.
But how long can that go on? When will the *real* release take place?
I would be happy about any comments.
BTW, I'm now a student at a Swedish University. Maybe I just can take
a trip over the great sea and pick me a machine? What do You say?
As you maybe has figured out, I'm *very* interested in this machine.
But I wont live forever, sad enough. Any tricks & tips? I sure can
take email with ANY piece of advice!
*) And another thing. What about its price? If the 6500 $ will be forever,
I wonder who are gonna buy it. It will not be the average student,
I'm sure. And is the 6500 enough for any serious work? What about the
extra HD for example. What's the HD:s price & can You really manage
   without it?
*) Suppose You wanna install in Your cube at home. How are You gonna
communicate with the rest of the world? I could think of a ordinary
modem connection, but what kind of off-machine communication
   does the NeXT really support?
*) How about the NeXT literature/documentation? Is there any books
or docs available outside its own optical drive? If You aint got
the machine, You can always read about it ... :-(
(I know about the 'ftp-available' docs and most of the popular press,
but is there any more serious printed material available somewhere
that takes the machine under consideration?)

Thank You for Your time and I would be *very* glad for any
response!

   	Everybodys sincerely -
