[comp.sys.next] Printing under 0.9

dmr@csli.Stanford.EDU (Daniel M. Rosenberg) (05/27/89)

Would someone mind letting me in on the straight dope about how
to make lpd behave under 0.9? We have no NeXT printer, so I
assume we don't worry about npd. Lpd sometimes works when killed
and restarted, and we *do* have our users select Public Window whatever
from Prefs. Even when lpd works, that doesn't seem to be reflected
from the Printer application. Things are especially screwy when printed
from an application, instead of merely a shell.

And what's the deal with /etc/printcap? The last entry, NetLaserWriter,
is the one we use. Its first line looks like:

NetLaserWriter:netlw:\

Instead of:

NetLaserWriter|netlw:\

But I think "correcting" it by replacing the bar with the colon
breaks things, and putting in additional aliases breaks things too.
Is netlw some kind of boolean, and not really a printer name?

Thanks for any info,
Dan
