[comp.sys.next] Graphics: NeXT -> Mac

boone@oce.orst.edu (Jeff Boone) (06/07/89)

I am able to transfer both PostScript and Tiff files from a Macintosh to
the NeXT machine with no problems. When I try to go the other way, all
hell breaks loose. Has anyone had any success transferring either PS,
EPS, or tiff files from the NeXT to the Macintosh?

Thanks a megabyte.

Most TIFF images on the NeXT computer are 2-bits, and some have alpha
channels.

There aren't too many Macintosh graphics programs that can read
2-bit TIFF files; apparently Digital Darkroom is one that can.
One strategy might be to read 2-bit files into Digital Darkroom and
save them as 8-bit TIFF files for use in other programs.

I don't think there are any Macintosh programs that can properly
read (or just even ignore) alpha channels. You might try loading such
images into Icon and saving without the alpha channel before taking them
over to a Macintosh. Or you can just use Icon. 8-)

The Webster images are stored in proprietary format for compression
purposes. These you won't be able to load into any Macintosh program
(without converting first; someone did actually post a conversion program
once and it might be available on a server somewhere).
