I recently brought up 0.9 and find that I cannot print anything other than the test page from the print program. I use neither YP nor netinfo, since my network consists of one NeXT, one 386/ix PC, and one DOS PS/2. A few minutes of poking around shows a lot of "cannot start daemon" messages, and it appears that the spooler dies with a bus error immediately after startup. On the console, I also get "unknown printer: np", even though my printcap looks reasonable. Perhaps nobody tested printing without netinfo turned on. Before I do a lot more investigation, I know that there have been lots of problems with 0.9 printing and wonder if this one seems familiar. -- John R. Bingo, you hit right on the head! They say accesses should go to /etc/* files if NetInfo is not running, but as for /etc/printcap, THEY LIE! The only solution I know of is to run NetInfo. True, this entails more of the headache of running NI. -------------------- Brad Carlson <carlson@mrcnext.cso.uiuc.edu> or <b-carlson@uiuc.edu> University of Illinos--Micro Resource Center--NeXT guru
