[comp.sys.next] Using large password files with NetInfo

mike@shogun.cc.umich.edu (Michael Nowak) (06/29/89)

An organization at our University wants to load their 4500
entry password file on to their NeXT machine and integrate it into
their network. They want to continue to use NetInfo (without it,
printing is very difficult) but when they load their huge password
file with niload, it fails.

How can they use NetInfo but keep the password file separate? Do
they need to run YP? It says in the NetInfo notes:

"YP may consult UNIX files (as defined by Sun), and so if YP is running,
various UNIX files may be consulted even if no actual calls to a YP
server occur over the network. For example, if YP is running and the
local /etc/passwd file has no *+: sign in it, it will be read even
though no calls to YP over the network can occur."

Could they run a YP server that just uses the password file? It sounds
like a password file without the ending '+' would do the trick.

This organization prefers not to use Yellow Pages. Is there a non-YP
solution?
