[comp.sys.next] traceroute support?

I don't suppose NeXT made the appropriate kernel changes to
support Van Jacobsen's traceroute... 1.0 maybe?

I got a reply from someone inside NeXT, Inc.
1.0 does not fix all known problems, and will not provide
complete IP support. That's planned for a subsequent release.
The impression I got (although not explicitly stated) was that
1.0 is pretty much frozen at this point.

Hit 'n' now.

Do we lack confidence in NeXT's support for higher education?
Let's just say ... we have a bunch of Suns on order. Our 9 NeXTs
have the best price/performance ratio and look-and-feel of any of
our workstations. We have a commitment to support them and
develop applications. They just don't do everything we need right
now. And we don't have sources!!!

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, let me clarify this. 1.0 fixes all
known significant bugs. We have a database of all known bugs (either
discovered by us or by people in the field) and have determined which bugs
are not important to fix for 1.0. (If we just tried to keep the UNIX
utilities bug free we would never ship a release :-).

With respect to IP, we are shipping the latest networking code released by
Berkeley. We are willing to consider any later enhancements that have
been talked about for a couple of years now, but they have never been
released (at least so far as I can determine).

Please, if you haven't done so, include the Van Jacobsen enhancements.
They're only a few lines of code (really; less than 20, I think),
and they affect performance on congested networks DRAMATICALLY, as
well as DRAMATICALLY reduce the strain on overworked gateways.

I'm sure everyone with a NeXT machine, and everyone on a network near
a NeXT machine, would be very happy if you did this.
