[comp.sys.next] DSP question

rwb@vi.ri.cmu.edu (Bob Berger) (08/04/89)

Is there some way to find out if the DSP is in use? DSPBootFile
prints an error, but does not return anything to the calling program
to indicate that an error occurred. I need to have the program know if
the boot suceeded.

(This has nothing to do with DSP questions...)

Greets, all. I'm a junior in high school interested in the NeXT.
I recently attended a Unix/Xenix meeting where I first "met" the personal
mainframe. Ok, I'm impressed out of my senses - but I want to know more.

Ok, first question... I have been told that there Will Soon Be a color
video option for the NeXT. How soon? And what kind of modifications will
be necessary to a b/w NeXT to have color? And at what cost? (Rough
estimates)

Maybe I'm being green-screen-retentive, but is there any way to *kill*
the GUI? To tear it all down and just have text? I probably won't do
that very often, but it would be reassuring to have the power. :)

I've also heard that the NeXT will be able to (can?) run Mac wares. Nice,
but is it true? And how will I stick the 3.5s into an optical drive?
Data transfer works for public domain, yes, but what about commercial
software?

Is it practical to buy a NeXT now (within the next year), or should
I wait for better versions?

Also, if anyone has any text information from NeXT, Inc. or tech data for
the not-yet initiated, feel free to dump it in my mailbox here at sugar.

   Thanks,
