After working to get uucp running, I thought others might find this info useful. If you are going to be doing dial in/out, you need to use /dev/ttya. This is in the users manual, but I was assuming that the two ports were identical. Also, Mac modem cables will not work for dial in/out. You need one that takes DCD from the modem to pin 7 of Serial A. Also, there is a problem where getty will get in a state where it won't open /dev/ttyda even though DCD is asserted. This does not happen all the time, but frequently enough to be annoying. I've called Tech Support on this one and they know about the bug. One grotesque way around this problem is to kill and restart getty periodically (carefully). Also, the sources to the dialer were very useful in tracking down configuration problems with the modem. Use -x9 on uucico. In fact, I built uucp from scratch because there was no dialer support for Telebit modems. Hope this helps some harried individuals. -- Eric H.
