I've FTP'd a new utility application, Unknown, to the submissions directory of the cs.orst.edu NeXT archive. Unknown is a no-op application but its existence in the application search path causes new icons to be defined for some file types that don't already have them. For example, it defines icons for '.c', '.h', etc. files in place of the default text document icon, however launching these documents still invokes the Edit application. It also defines icons for binary '.o', '.a', etc. files also, but launching them will no longer invoke the text editor--instead, it displays the Unknown icon and quits (making the NeXT a little safer for new users). Adding icons for files also makes it possible to select '.c', '.h', etc. files in the 'View>Filter..' window of the Workspace Manager. You can also add your own icons (and owner application mappings) and then remake Unknown. In fact, this is really a pre-release of the Unknown application. I hope the icons will increase in number and quality as others who are more artistically inclined than I get interested. People with potential additions should send me mail. See the file Unknown.icondata for examples of file types that (do and) don't have icons yet. See the README file for more details. Comments/suggestions welcome. - Christopher
