[comp.sys.next] NeXT v1.0

chavez@sumex-aim.stanford.edu (R. Martin Chavez) (09/13/89)

The NeXT Telebusiness representative at headquarters in Redwood
City told me that distribution centers (e.g., Stanford's Microdisc)
should be providing v1.0 upgrades in a week or a week and a half.

Yes, 1.0 is out! Upgrade kits are being made around the clock and
they will be on their way to all NeXT users by the end of next week.

BusinessLand stores should also have 1.0 up and running soon.

What about manual upgrades? Will those be shipped automatically, or with
the upgrades, or do we need to do something special? And what is the
timing on that?

1.0 User Documentation is in the 1.0 Upgrade Kit. 1.0 Technical Documentation
is online on the 1.0 disk. Final, printed 1.0 Technical Documentation will
be available at a later date.

If you've bought the 0.8 or 0.9 Technical Documentation, you should send in
the yellow registration card that arrived with it to assure that you will
receive the printed version of the 1.0 Tech Docs when they become available.

Not all of the 1.0 Technical Documentation is online on the 1.0 disk.
I got my NeXT Release 1.0 shipment yesterday and it looks great. However,
I wanted to connect a third party SCSI disk to the cube so immediately went
looking for the documentation that was promised in the 0.9 release.

I found the entries in Digital Librarian only to see that "This chapter
isn't available on-line". The following chapters of the system administration
manuals appear to be absent:

1	Introduction - Shipped in hardcopy with the 1.0 release
2	Basic Procedure - Shipped in hardcopy with the 1.0 release
	 5	Networking Services
	 6	Communications
	 9	Upgrading System Software
	10	Adding Hardware
	11	Security
	12	Disk-A Disk Maintenance Program

When should I expect to see the printed version of the documentation? I've
only played with 1.0 for a short time, but I am pleased with how it looks.
Many bugs have been fixed that make it a much better system.
