[net.auto] Omni/Horizon engine problem

koved@tove.UUCP (Larry Koved) (08/16/85)

What would cause the engine to burn LOTS of oil (1 quart per 250-300 mi.).
One spark plug becomes so fouled that gap is filled with oil.
The other plugs are not much better. BTW, the engine is in a '79 horizon,
which is the same engine as the VW Rabbit for the same year.
The engine had 90-100K mi.

I was told that the cylinders were scoured, thus the block was replaced.
Now, the head gasket is leaking oil all over the driveway, and it burns
MORE oil than before (about 80 mi. per quart!!!!).

Any suggestions, besides junking the car and/or the mechanic?

Junk the mechanic for sure!!! There are two points I'm curious about,

First of all, did the block need to be 'replaced', Maybe
a rebore would have done it, ( Mechanic's recommendation, I suspect )

Second, If the head gasket is leaking oil all over, I'd be back at
the mechanic's faster that you can say 'shoddy workmanship' Anything
like that is ABSOLUTELY outrageous, and demands reparation or if not
legal action.

Its not in doubt that the original problem existed. It is not
uncommon for cars of 80 K or greater miles to burn alot of oil, especially
if it is not warmed up in the morning before jumping into the commute or
alot of start and stop driving, this would necessitate reboring, or a ring
and valve job, or in extreme cases a new block ( $$$ )

If I were you I'd go back to the mechanic with a gun and a lawsuit
and say 'please could you fix my car the right way this time...'
