[comp.sys.next] Where are NeXT ftp-sites?

davec@CSUFRES.CSUFRESNO.EDU (David C. Choweller) (10/14/89)

Does anyone know of anonymous FTP sites that contain NeXT software, or
graphics and sounds that can be used on the NeXT? Please e-mail me,
and I'll summarize to the net if there's interest. I know of one site
only - cs.orst.edu .

Following is the README and ARCHIVE files in the archive on
cc.purdue.edu. The ftp locations are near the end. I am accepting
new submissions - please address them to next-archive@cc.purdue.edu.
NeXT mail attachments are Okay - please don't send binaries or ".o"
files. If you need to set up a better method than email for sending in
a submission, send email to next-archive asking for a better way. I
can usually set things up so you can ftp them in, or we can work out
something with an OD. Once I get more time I'll send out more info
and update the INDEX file. This group is archived out there in monthly
segments - it's a good place to look for your commonly asked question
and its answer.

=========README=======

This is a moderated archive, containing information about the NeXT computer,
pointers to other archives and sources of informaion, and public domain
software written for and ported to the NeXT. The purpose of this archive is
to facilitate the distribution of such information and software, and to help
reduce the need for individuals to reinvent the wheel.

I have moved 0.8 specific sources to 0.8sources. If I can get them to work
under 0.9, I'll move them to the "source" directory. As it stands, some of
them do not work without modification, and I would prefer to keep tried and
tested software for the current release in the "source" directory. Please
let me know if you modify any of these programs to work under 0.9 or if
they work as they are.

Documents are now in "docs". Patches are in "patches".

This NeXT archive will contain several types of files:

``.Z'' files are compressed using the UNIX compress program to save
space. They can be reconstitued using the UNIX uncompress program.
You must uncompress these files before you can do anything else to
them (e.g., tar). These files must be transfered using the FTP
	binary mode.

``.tar'' files are archives created by the UNIX tar program. tar is
used to place multiple files, even multiple directories, into a
single file to make shipment easy. The contents of these files are
usually described in associated ``.info files''. ``.tar'' files
must be transferred using FTP binary mode. Most (all?) of the .tar
files are in compressed (``.Z'') format, which must be transferred in
	binary mode, anyway.

The index to sources available here is in the file INDEX.

Pointers to other archives are in the file ARCHIVES.

If you have questions about the archive or have something that you think
should be added, send mail to "next-archive@j.cc.purdue.edu"
