[comp.sys.next] NeXT printers on a network

utoddl@uncecs.edu (Todd M. Lewis) (11/11/89)

We're trying to find out how to get non-NeXT computers (like a
Sun) to print on a NeXT printer over ethernet. We're sortta new
at UNIX, and any pointers you could give us would be greatly
appreciated.

It's actually incredibly easy. I just did this to a few machines the other day. They get
along famously. Essentially, just run the Print queue utility and do Configure. You can define
Your local printer as a net printer. Do so, do nidump printcap . > /tmp/pcap then
copy it to the sun and add the relevant entry to its printcap. That is the convoluted
but easy way to happy connectivity! (also, you need to make the spool directory and kill
and restart lpd.)
