In the discussion regarding radar I have not seen mention of another useful feature of the detector--It tells you when the radar was NOT turned on. My wife was stopped this morning for going 50 in a 45 zone, by a cop parked facing the same way, with the radar mounted on the dashboard, pointing toward oncoming traffic. The detector never went off. The officer showed her the "reading" on the radar, stopped her in the MIDDLE of the road for 15 minutes even after she requested that they move to a safer spot, attempted to cite her for having expired insurance (it BEGAN in June 85, exppires in June 86), etc. The radar detector is just one useful device to help show that she was set-up by a beginner, who was desperate to the point of dishonesty. Today I buy my second detector, for my own car!

In this case, ask to see the display on the radar unit to verify what the cop said. If he says 58, you should see a big "58" on the display. Then in court, request the preceding 5 tickets as evidence. If the last 5 tickets the cop gave out were for 58, you probably have a corrupt cop that didn't reset the unit from the first speeder. Don't laugh at this trick, it's more common than you think. If I get one, I'll not stop at getting out of the ticket, I'll get a lawyer and nail the cop for as much as I can, up to and beyond his job. Cops are human and make mistakes, but this kind of activity is flat out criminal. mikey at trsvax
