[net.auto] Spare Tire saga

Just a word of warning to anyone out there with "special" tires. I just
completed my vaction to the northeast US. I took my Omni GLH Turbo that
came with standard 195/50HR15 Eagle GT's. Great car, great tires. On
saturday night at about 6:30, I had a flat left front tire. Amazingly, I
didn't realize it was flat for at least 20 miles. I was going about 70 on
I-81 and the only indication was that when we hit a bump or a dip, we heard
a funny road noise. There was no pull to that side, the car didn't lean, and
nothing seemed out of the ordinary. When I took an offamp, the brakes seemed
a little funny, seems the tire was just spinning on the rim. What it boils
down to is: try to find a replacement tire in a 'bible belt' town on
saturday night. The one garage told me most places didn't even open
on saturday. The only place that would even look at it was a Montgomery
Wards. They examined the tire, cleaned everythig up, and pluged it for
only 6 bucks, including torqueing two wheels. The garage on the highway
charged me 10 bucks to take the tire off and tell me tough beans!
If it weren't for the Montgomery Wards, I'd have to wait till monday
morning to even try to get a new tire. The space saver spare sure wouldn't
have gotton me another 300 miles to Pennsylvania. I went to the Goodyear
dealer during the week and even there they said that size tire would take
a few days to get.

The moral of the story? Carry a full size spare!
